苏东坡很有同情心 。他在杭州作官时，有一次一位绫绢商人告一个制扇匠人欠他两万绫绢钱不还 。匠人说：“前不久他父亲死了，花了一笔钱 。今年杭州连日阴雨，天气寒冷 ， 没有人买扇子，我一时拿不出钱来还帐 。”
苏轼想了半天，让那匠人回家把扇子抱来，挑出二十把折扇，拿起公堂上的毛笔，在扇面上题字、作画，然后命匠人快拿到外面去卖 。匠人刚出衙门，扇子就被抢购一空，每把一千钱，正好够还帐的 。
四十五岁时苏东坡在监狱被关了一百天，幸好皇帝特赦才被放出 。后来他在一片杂记中说：我从小就不喜欢杀生，可是也没有完全断绝过 。近年来开始不杀猪羊了，可是生性喜欢吃蟹蛤，免不了有时要杀 。
去年得罪被关进监狱，开始以为不能脱身了 ， 不想后来获得幸免，于是从此不再杀一物 。有时买来蟹蛤，都放进江中 。虽然知道蛤在江里活不了，可也许有个万一吧 。即使活不了，也比在锅里受煎熬要好得多 。我并没有什么别的想法，只是因为自己也经历过了患难，和在厨房中的鸡鸭没有区别，不想再因为口腹之故，使生命受到这无穷无尽的恐惧 。只是恨自己不能忘记美味，有时买死的蟹蛤来吃 。
东坡画扇的意思是：“东坡画扇”比喻关心百姓疾苦 。
